Mrs. Burkey

A little about me:  I attended Carterville schools from kindergarten through my senior year of high school.  After high school, I attended John A. Logan College and SIU-Carbondale, where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Secondary Education. I met my husband, Ryan, while I was in college, and we now have five children: our twin daughters graduated from CHS in 2020, and our other three kids attend Carterville schools.  We also

have six pets: two dogs and four cats.

While at SIU-C, I worked in the SIU Writing Lab, and I was able to tutor students from a variety

of backgrounds and skill levels in writing.  I have also taught in Nashville, IL, and Marion,

IL.  I am now in my sixth year of teaching at CHS, and I am a junior class sponsor and co-sponsor of the CHS Scholastic Bowl Team.

I truly enjoy teaching and meeting new people, and I love to spend time with my family, read, and travel.  In 2019, I traveled with seven students from Carterville, over twenty students from Marion, and one student from Harrisburg

on an educational tour through southern Spain, and this coming summer, if travel abroad is safe, I am hoping to go on another educational tour to Ireland, England, and France. I truly believe that experiencing different cultures and exploring new environments is a great way to learn about the world and to build empathy for others. I look forward to sharing my experiences and learning about your experiences this school year.
